Frequently asked questions

What is required of volunteers?

No special skills, experience or training is required – just your presence and your enthusiasm. We will provide briefing notes and/or the opportunity to attend a pre-event briefing so you can learn all about the task assigned to you.

What is really important is that once you register as a volunteer you let us know if for some reason you cannot attend on Sunday 10 May. If you have registered as a volunteer, we are relying on you to arrive bright and early on Sunday 10 May.

How will you know what you have to do?

Once you have registered online we will contact you to let you know what task has been allocated to you and other information you need. We usually finalise this information in the three weeks leading up to the event, so it might be a little while before you hear from us… we haven’t forgotten you!

Some tasks include one or more of the following:

  • Information desk
  • Registration
  • Tribute card distribution
  • Merchandise sales
  • Jumping castle supervision
  • Finish line
  • Number pick-up

What do I need to bring?

Enthusiasm! And please remember to dress according to the weather (warm clothing, rain jacket, hat, sun cream) and wear comfortable shoes.

At volunteer registration, you will receive a t-shirt to be worn on the day, so that you can be easily recognised.

Note: there are no secure facilities to leave personal belongings.

Where do I register as a volunteer on the day?

A volunteer registration area will be set up where you can collect your t-shirt, Mother’s Day Classic medallion, lanyard, light snack and drink.

Volunteer testimonials

It is a truly humbling experience to be a Mother’s Day Classic volunteer and for me, the second Sunday in May has become synonymous with watching the sun rise over Alexandra Gardens as it fills up with runners, walkers and families, and seeing all the planning come together for such an amazing cause.

Kaitlin

My first encounter with the Mother’s Day Classic was in 2008. It was a very poignant day for my daughter and I as my mother had passed away due to breast cancer in September 2007.

The event left us both a tremedous feeling of solidarity and support and the knowledge that we were contributing in a positive way to overcoming this terrible disease.

Helene Mathews

I worked on the volunteer registration table and had a great time. Watching thousands of people do aerobics is something to see, smelling the sausages, watching the kids play and the general feeling is wonderful.

I can say I’ve never experienced anything like it - to top it off when I got home I had a wonderful Mothers Day lunch ready and waiting. I’ll be back!

Pauline

After 3 years as a volunteer with the Mothers Day Classic the event is a now a permanent fixture on my calendar! It’s a real buzz to give your time to such a worthwhile cause. You get to meet lots of wonderful people, many whom have been personally touched by breast cancer.

The spirit on the day is infectious, everyone just wants to get out there, have some fun and support breast cancer research. By helping to make it happen you won’t be able to wipe the smile off your face.

Jo

The Mothers Day Classic is a great event to be involved in as a volunteer on the day. Thousands of participants are running or walking to raise money for breast cancer research and you have the opportunity to contribute in a small way to the efficient running of the event.
The volunteers are well briefed and supported. Everyone pitches in and there is enormous personal reward for your effort.
