Ann Hollingworth – Breast Cancer Survivor of five years

May 1st, 2008 by Ann

Two years ago I celebrated my 70th birthday, I asked my friends not to present me with gifts but, instead, to give the more thoughtful gift of breast cancer research. ann.jpg By encouraging friends and family to sponsor my participation in the 4km walk at the Mothers Day Classic, I felt that together we could make a bigger contribution to something very worthwhile.

It turned out to be one of the best birthdays ever – at my age I certainly don’t need any material gifts and think that the Mothers Day Classic is a wonderful way to help fight breast cancer. When I was diagnosed, I felt overwhelmed but determined to participate in some capacity for cancer research. I now know that there is a big community of survivors and the Mothers Day Classic is the best way to celebrate life, friends and family.

If you can’t walk or run yourself on Sunday 11 May, why not sponsor someone who can?

This month I celebrated my 47th bithday and a year since finishing treament - fingers crossed forever, for breast cancer.
Last year was the first year that I walked the classic although I had hoped to run. Not being a runner by nature and only having finished with all the chemo/radio, I was not quite ready - but this year look out Hobart here I come!!
I think my training has been OK for a flat 4 kms - but have you seen the last Km return hill? I went for a run on the hill on Wednesday and may have to walk just a lit-tle bit on the day, but if I walk fast it will probably be as fast as my running pace anyway!
Having joined the Dragon “Pinkies” my fitness level has improved over the last year too. We mustn’t forget the message that fitness, weight controland healthy diet are great preventative components for breast cancer occurrence and recurrence too.
    Smooth Running,
    Miriam

I don’t suffer from breast cancer, but have other problems, which after reading the stories on this site make me realise that no matter how bad I feel somedays, there are others worse off. I am waiting on a second hip replacement, but am going to look into doing the fun walk for Cancer once that has been done. My thoughts with one and all, hope it all goes well. Sandy.
